I have been thinking

What really kick-started this thought was an experience that happened to Bobbies parents at the airport recently. They were walking through and saw Elder Dallin H. Oaks. They got an opportunity to talk with him and shake his hand. I remember them describing the event as being very neat to be there with him. They said he must be a very busy man, he looked busy and was walking in a busy fashion. But he stopped and greeted them as if they were old friends. Wherever he was going, whatever was waiting for him, must wait, this was more important. I have heard other stories like this about General Authorities, stopping whatever it is they are doing just to say hello. I am sure this is how they act with every opportunity to serve and that is what this post is about. I have been talking with Bobbie about how I need to be more giving of my time and talents. When I lived in Utah I stopped for every car on the side of the road that looked like it needed help. I did it so much I remember looking forward to stopping again. Everyone I met was friendly and every time I was able to help them. I do not think we are always so busy that we can not stop and help someone who has a flat tire.

The other day I was able to help out my neighbor who we have lived next to for about 8 months. That is way too long to not know anything about them. They drink and party and were pretty rude when we first moved in, but it got better and we would say hello to each other. Well, the other day I was mowing the backyard and planned on weed-whacking next (reverse order, I know), on my way to put the lawn mower away my neighbor was out working on his Jeep and said in an unusual manner, "hey, what's going on?" So I took this opportunity to talk and responded with, "something wrong with your Jeep?" we began talking and he needed some WD-40 and some other things, which I had. Also, While we talked I tuned up his lawn mower for him and got it running. I never got to finish my backyard. I was over there for like an hour and a half. I have said maybe ten words to this guy before this day and now I feel like I can go over and ask him for a cup of sugar.

Anyway, the point is that I, we, people should start doing more for others. Give of our time when we have time to give. Share our talents, use our skills and abilities to help others. I also need to stop being so negative, I think that would help a whole heap.

Well said. Now say goodbye to your neighbor and move back to Utah. These stranded people on the sides of the road are lost without you.
